Goal Setting

Boutique Fitness - Goal Setting

Why do I need to set goals?

You need to set goals to help you achieve what it is you want to get from your training, your new way of life.

When you are setting/planning your goals, it can be easy to get carried away and make them too big. To get to your goal remember, you also need a reason why, why are you doing this?

Your goals need to be for yourself, a holiday, a wedding, weight loss or to lead a healthy lifestyle. It’s great to have a big end goal and visualise yourself where you would like to be with your health, weight and fitness level, but to get there it is very important to set small goals, that you can achieve weekly or monthly. These will help to keep you motivated and when you succeed at reaching the small goals, it will keep you focused on reaching the end goal.

The smaller goals these can be about anything you choose, for example your healthy eating plan, trying new foods/recipes or learning new exercises. For instance, if you like jogging/running but have always used a treadmill, try running outside instead, or pushing yourself by going up a level on the bike or x-trainer, or trying a heavier weight.

Try to make sure you set SMART goals

Specific
Your goal needs to be specific about what it is you want to achieve.

Measurable
You need to establish how you are going to measure your progress to reach your end goal. By planning small goals along the way and measuring progress, it will help you keep on track. Once you start to experience the feeling of achieving even the smallest of goals, this will spur you on towards your end goal.

Achievable
Once you have identified what your goals are, you need to plan how to make them achievable to you, even if it they feel out of reach. Now you know what is most important to you, you will naturally start to find ways to make it work for you. You will start to develop new attitudes and skills to achieve your goal.

Realistic
Whatever you decide your goal is, it has to be realistic and you need to believe that you can achieve it.

Timely
Your goal needs a time frame, or a set date that you want to have achieved it by for you to stay focused. It can be a good idea to look back and see if you have set yourself a goal like this before and to see how it went, to give you an idea of how long you want it to take. If you didn’t succeed before, ask yourself, did you set out SMART goals? If not, then this time will be different and you will succeed..
